The remarkable find of a Richmond musician

Family stories are not always reliable. Memory plays tricks, and some relatives tend to boast, but a man from a suburb of Richmond now has evidence. His father was telling the truth when he boasted a famous jazz musician who wrote him a song.

When he’s not creating websites for clients, Zak Young sometimes sits in a bedroom on the second floor of his Glen Allen home surrounded by a collection of more than 700 record – composing beats – items for local hip-hop artists like Rep.

Zak shared a love of music with his father.

“When my dad took me to shop for CDs, I would always come up to him with a handful of CDs and say, ‘I’m not sure which one to get,'” he recalls. “He said, ‘Get them all! ‘You know I bought rap CDs and tapes. He didn’t really connect with that music, but he saw in me the same passion for music that he had. I mean, he was really into jazz. He really liked classic rock and at some point he would give me all of his records and I spent years researching that. I still have notes from him upstairs that I have not received. “

His grandfather Paul Young also loved music and had a nightclub in DC called the Romany Room.

“We’re talking about the 1940s in Washington, DC. I think back then it would have been some kind of loungey and jazz – that kind of scene. The most famous act was Nat King Cole, ”says Zak Young.

There were still separate times in Washington. White nightclubs usually didn’t hire black artists, but Paul Young did, and Zak’s grandpa claimed he and Cole were close together.

“When my father was born, that would have been 1941, Nat King Cole was playing in my grandfather’s club and recording a song for him to celebrate my father’s birth.”

His father would actually sing the song, but Zak was skeptical and it never crossed his mind that the tune was recorded.

“I mean, we live in a time when you can record things on your computer or your phone. Of course we had tapes and everything else before that, but back then there was no way to just record music. “

But while combing through his father’s record collection, he came across an old single that was recorded at 78 revolutions per minute. He didn’t have a stereo to play it, so he sent the recording to a studio for it to be converted to a digital file.

“It was maybe a week later when they emailed me, and once I played the file, it was the song my father had literally sung.”

Still unsure if this was really a Nat King Cole song that was never officially released, he tracked down an expert – Jordan Taylor – who happened to live in Richmond.

“I said to him, ‘I think I have a one-off recording of Nat King Cole that no one has heard before,’ and he said, ‘Okay. For sure. What makes you think that?’ I told him the backstory and he said, “Let me do a little research,” and he got back to me pretty quickly and said, “You know what?” I looked at the historical record and he actually played in DC back then. ‘So I sent him a clip of the recording and he said,’ It’s the real deal! ‘ “

Of course, Zak Young shared the news with his own son Max, who plays the clarinet and saxophone. He was fascinated.

“I’m getting older now, so I’m more interested in my family,” says Max. “I think that’s really cool.”

The story inspired a trip to his grandfather’s grave and a long conversation with his grandmother. Jordan Taylor eventually arranged for the song to be released, and now Zak Young is sharing his own piece of family history – with you.

The renewal of Arlington Heights Road begins on Monday

A five-mile renewal of Arlington Heights Road is one of the Department of Transportation’s road projects in northwest Illinois, expected to begin Monday.

Work on Arlington Heights Road, from Higgins Road in Elk Grove Village to Palatine Road in Arlington Heights, includes renewing the surface, building new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and installing pedestrian push-button posts at the intersections.

Similar work is being carried out on a 4.8 mile stretch of Palatine Road, from Algonquin Road in South Barrington to Roselle Road in Inverness and Palatine. Both projects should be completed in October.

A 1.7 mile section of Busse Road from Higgins Road in Elk Grove Village to Golf Road in Mount Prospect will be paved again and will include new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. This work will be completed in August.

Officials say the projects will require daily, intermittent lane closures. Access to homes and businesses within the work areas is maintained throughout the construction.

How to Send an E-Card to a Richmond County Teacher

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW / WAGT) – Schools in Richmond County will join schools across the country to celebrate Teacher Recognition Week May 3-7 next week.

NS reports 67 new COVID cases, but testing the residue means higher numbers are likely to come

Nova Scotia is up against tens of thousands of unprocessed COVID-19 tests backlog, many of which are likely positive, according to the province’s best doctor.

“We have to be prepared for much higher case numbers in the next few days,” said Dr. Robert Strang, Chief Medical Officer of Health, at a Friday afternoon briefing.

According to Strang, 45,000 tests are queued in the provincial microbiology labs. There’s also a backlog in data entry, he said.

This means that the province’s testing strategy is temporarily changing so that the primary assessment centers are only open for:

  • Anyone with symptoms.
  • Anyone who has been notified that they are in close contact with a known case.
  • Anyone who has been at an exposure site.
  • Anyone who has traveled outside of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Asymptomatic tests for everyone else will still be available at pop-up quick test sites.

589 active cases

The province reported 67 new cases Friday and has 589 active cases in total, but Strang said the real number is likely much higher.

There are 57 new cases in the central zone, three in the northern zone, four in the western zone, and three in the eastern zone. The province said 22 people were in the hospital, five in intensive care.

Strang emphasized the severity of the current Nova Scotia outbreak at the briefing on Friday. He said the situation is more serious now than at any time during the pandemic.

Now is a critical time for people to stay home and abide by all other public health restrictions, he said.

“We are seeing the pressures in many parts of our health system, such as public health and the laboratory, and we are beginning to see an impact on our hospitals,” said Strang.

He said additional health system benefits cuts will come as a “substantial increase” in hospital stays is expected.

“We cannot vaccinate ourselves from this immediate problem. The only quick and effective solution is the public health restrictions and border measures we are putting in place,” he said.

Strang hopes the test jam and data entry will be cleared over the weekend.

When asked by reporters, he dared not guess how many more positive results there would be among the 45,000 unprocessed swabs. While the numbers can be high, he said, they will represent behavior that predates the current lockdown.

Given the tough restrictions that went into effect across the province this week, Strang is confident that case numbers will start to decline at some point next week.

AstraZeneca-Oxford opens to more than 40

Strang and Prime Minister Iain Rankin announced on Wednesday that Nova Scotians ages 40 to 54 could start booking the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine on Friday, as the province is currently in excess of about 10,000 doses.

The appointments opened at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and most were fully booked within a few hours. Additional dates could still be added.

There are nearly 200,000 Nova Scotians between 40 and 54.

The AstraZeneca vaccine was already available to people aged 55 to 64, and people aged 55 and over are also eligible for the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.

Vaccine rollout on track

As of this week, more than 30 percent of eligible Nova Scotians have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

More than 80 percent of all Nova Scotians 70 and over had at least one dose and around 75 percent of 65 to 69 year olds.

Premier Iain Rankin and Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Robert Strang, share an age breakdown of active COVID-19 cases. Most cases are between 16 and 30 years old. (Communication Nova Scotia)

Strang said it was crucial to see strong uptake in the younger age groups when doses are available for them.

The province continues to expect vaccination appointments to be made available to all 16 by the end of June.

Atlantic Canada case numbers

  • Newfoundland and Labrador reported eight new cases as well as three suspected cases on Friday. There are 33 active cases and two people in the hospital.
  • New Brunswick reported 15 new cases on Friday. There are 127 active cases. Four people are in the hospital, two in the intensive care unit.
  • PEI announced two new cases on Friday for a total of 12 active cases. Nobody is currently in the hospital.

Three Manassas men charged with the death of the deputy son’s son hit the headlines

Fauquier Sheriff’s detectives arrested two other suspects in the murder of a Remington man last week.

The arrests “during the night” bring the number of people charged in the fatal shooting of Charles W. “Tripp” Bopp, 24, outside his home west of town to four, the sheriff’s office said Thursday morning .

Jose Vidal Pereira, 31, from Manassas, is charged with murder, burglary, conspiracy to break into and use a firearm in the commission of a crime, Sgt. Steve Lewis said in a press release.

Darren Nathaniel Davis, 36, of Manassas, faces the same charges.

“Both are being detained at the adult detention center in Fauquier County,” said Sgt. Lewis said. “The investigation is still ongoing. More details will be released as they become available. “

Federal and Texas authorities arrested on Monday Martin Anuar Martinez, 30, from Manassas, about 1,700 miles from the crime scene.

Mr. Martinez is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, daytime armed burglary, and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime.

The sheriff’s detectives were arrested on Saturday Jury Beatrice Guerra, 28, from Woodbridge, accusing her of murder and conspiracy to break into the office.

Ms. Guerra will hold a preliminary hearing in Fauquier County District Court on July 28th.

Mr Bopp interrupted a robbery at his home on the 11900 block on Freemans Ford Road, authorities said. When MPs responded to a shootout shortly after 5.30 p.m. last Thursday, they found the farmer fatally wounded by his vehicle in the front yard.

The Department of Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI, the US Marshals Service, Prince William County Police and Manassas City Police have joined the investigation into the murder of Mr. Bopp.

The victim’s father, Charles W. Bopp Jr., retired on August 31 as a major, one of the most senior members of the Fauquier sheriff’s office. Maj. Bopp previously served as the US intelligence agent in charge after moving from the alcohol, tobacco and firearms bureau.
