FreightWaves Classics: The Port of Virginia – America’s first port

Clean the Bay Day: Chesapeake Bay Foundation brings back day dedicated to cleaning the bay

REGIONAL – The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is bringing back their annual Clean the Bay Day in a new way this year. What was once a single day devoted to garbage collection has been reinterpreted as a week-long cleanup across Virginia.

Last year’s Clean the Bay Day was canceled due to COVID-19. This was the first time that the CBF tradition had been skipped a year since the event began in 1989.

Prior to 2020, on the first Saturday in June, thousands of volunteers gathered at hundreds of cleanup sites across Virginia and retrieved over 100,000 pounds of trash every year.

Now, with a full week devoted to cleaning, everyone can safely participate to help restore the environment by either cleaning up trash everywhere, planting native plants, or installing rain barrels. Volunteers can take action in any convenient location, in their own time and at their own pace. You can then log your results online.

“The revamped Clean the Bay Day is making it easier than ever for people to restore their local rivers, streams and the Chesapeake Bay,” said Kristin Webb, CBF Clean the Bay Day coordinator. “Do you have a few minutes off? Grab a trash bag and gloves and do a trash cleanup in your neighborhood. Do you want to go out of the house with the kids? Do a cleanup in a local public park. “

This year’s Clean the Bay Day takes place from May 31st to June 5th. Volunteers are encouraged to post videos and photos on social media and use the hashtag #CleanTheBayDay to win prizes.

Families or friends can use the Clean the Bay Day online portal to form a virtual team and report on the progress, where their actions are visible to other participants in the event. Registration and reporting results are required to participate and win prizes.

“We’re promoting a friendly competition as people post their results on the Clean the Bay Day website and post photos and videos on social media,” said Webb. “This will bring people together and lead to more people taking action. From Charlottesville to Richmond to Virginia Beach to Northern Virginia, I can’t wait to see reviews and photos of how everyone is doing their part for our waterways. “

The prizes are awarded in different categories, including the best photo and the best video.

Governors propose $1B federal investment in Chesapeake Bay cleanup | Govt. & Politics

RICHMOND – Virginia Governor Ralph Northam joined forces with other heads of state in the Chesapeake Bay watershed on Thursday to call for a $ 1 billion federal investment in the decade-long rehabilitation of the country’s largest estuary.

This “significant and much-needed infusion of new funds … will kick off the final phase of restoration of the bay and encourage people to build clean water infrastructure, including green infrastructure that reduces pollution of rainwater and agricultural water, restoring more natural.” Landscapes and helps us adapt to the effects of climate change, ”reads the letter in which the billion for the Bay Initiative is touted.

Along with Northam, who currently chairs the Chesapeake Bay Executive Council, the motion was approved by the governors of Maryland, Delaware, New York, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, the mayors of Washington, DC, and Virginia Del. David Bulova, D-Fairfax, signed, the chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Commission.

Northam spokeswoman Alena Yarmosky said the intent was to use the $ 1 billion federal grant “through additional government, local and private dollars to advance any country-specific cleanup plan.”

“This would be a one-time funding with the knowledge that it will be rolled out over the next few years,” she wrote in an email.

Thousands of former Christian Psychotherapy patients may ‘never’ get their medical records

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WELLIG) – 36 years ago by Dr. Page Huff, Christian Psychotherapy, founded Services have for decades been seen as the preferred location for patients in need of mental health care in the Hampton Roads area.

Patients, employees and even competitors gave the organization high marks. Huff died unexpectedly last year. Sources say financial problems surfaced after his death. In January, with little notification from 100 employees and no notification from thousands of patients, the practice closed four sites, including a southern Chesapeake site now being used by a construction company.

Ann Anderson was a long-term patient at the Chesapeake site.

“They literally closed overnight, it was like seeing patients on Friday and they disappeared over the weekend,” said Anderson.

Anderson was able to contact her doctor, but four months after completing the practice, she was unable to contact her medical records.

“Together with you [the practice] disappeared, all patient files went. That’s my concern, “said Anderson.

10 On Your Side may have found her records and the records of hundreds, maybe thousands, of other patients crammed together on shelves and piled on the floor. A confidential source toured the building at 609 Independence Parkway in January, shortly after the practice closed and the offices appeared to have been put on the market. The source says there were unsecured medical records in every room in the building, which has an estimated 20 rooms.

The confidential source told 10 On Your Side that employees left the building in January but the recordings were left behind. The source went on to say that anyone who looked at this property with the potential to rent or buy the building could have seen sensitive medical records.

Anderson was stunned to learn about the images of unsecured patient records.

“Oh my god. That’s just wrong. That’s just wrong,” said a visibly annoyed Anderson.

WAVY’s Regina Mobley spoke to a former CPS veteran who has told his patients that they will likely never receive their records.

In a recent Richmond Circuit Court hearing, CPS was found to be in default with a lender. Another civil case filed by employees is pending in the Virginia Beach Circuit Court.

Before she died, a Chesapeake woman scheduled a surprise delivery to her friend | State and Regional News

Fran and Jim Williams hold the cake that their friend Mary Fallon sent them for their 50th wedding anniversary. Fallon, who passed away in March, ordered the cake in December 2020 and scheduled delivery to celebrate Williams’ anniversary on May 8th. (Courtesy Fran Williams)

BY ALISSA SKELTON The Virginian pilot

When Mary Fallon was on her deathbed a few weeks ago, she made sure she ordered a cake.

Fallon understood that if it were handed over to her friend Fran Williams, who was celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband Jim on Saturday, she would not live to see it again. But Fallon was determined to make the couple feel special, said their daughter Mary Ellen Chandler.

“She would sleep 23 hours,” said Chandler. “When she wakes up, she says, ‘You have to make sure Fran’s cake gets there. ‘”

Baker Michelle Schneider said she has never received such a thoughtful request, especially from someone who takes pain medication and is in hospice care.

“It was the most special cake I’ve made in a long time,” said Schneider.

Fallon and Williams bonded shortly after meeting at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Chesapeake years ago. They were the kind of friends who would treat each other for lunch during their birthday weeks.

Williams said Fallon was pretty much the character and loved making people laugh. Fallon, who volunteered in her church pantry, wore costumes every holiday – she had a closet full of them.

When Fallon moved into an assisted living facility about three years ago, she kept trying to lift people’s spirits with her vacation wardrobe. At Easter she dressed as a rabbit and distributed sweets to the residents.
