Wildcats in search of their first win against winless Cougars | Nvdaily

FRONT ROYAL – Warren County face an opponent in a familiar position on Friday.

The winless Wildcats play in Class 3 Northwestern District Football Action at Manassas Park without a win.

Warren County’s senior Emery Coffman said the Wildcats are eager to claim their first win, but they know the Cougars are too.

“I just want to win and I know they want to win too,” said Coffman. “I think no matter what, both teams will do their best to get their first win of the season.”

The Wildcats (0-6, 0-2 Class 3 Northwestern) show their best offensive performance this season, a 48-22 loss to Meridian.

Warren County manager Jerry Sarchet said he saw some real advantages on the offensive last week.

“We moved the ball offensive and finally got points,” said Sarchet. “We gave up a lot early on. We lost a few balls. But in the end we moved the ball pretty well. I think that’s a good sign for the future.”

Warren County’s running game was led by a second and two freshmen this season. Sophomore PJ Dellinger has 225 yards of rushing, newbie Gavin Dodson has 157 yards and a touchdown, and newbie Christian Weller has 142 yards and two scores.

“It looks good for the future when these ninth graders play,” said Sarchet. “We just have to keep pushing it and keep everything positive.”

Sarchet said the offensive was helped by the return of junior DJ Rizzo, who missed most of the season due to injury.

Junior quarterback Nick Foltz has thrown for 342 yards and a touchdown. Junior Will Moreno has 10 receptions for 95 yards and Senior Aadon Atwood has nine catches for 112 yards.

Sarchet said defense had been a strength for the Wildcats for most of the season, but that wasn’t the case against Meridian.

“We simply didn’t show any discipline on the defensive,” said Sarchet. “And (Meridian) did what they do with teams that have no discipline – they just walked through us. If the field was 900 or 100 meters, we didn’t stop them and we lost focus, we lost . ” Discipline.”

Coffman said the defense must narrow down the big moves they give up.

“Our defense is mostly good, but every now and then we miss a big game or screw up in some way,” said Coffman. “We get a flag and it messes up our flow and everything. But once we get that under control, we should be fine.”

The Cougars (0-6, 0-1 Class 3 Northwestern) were beaten 330-0 this season and are still looking for their first points of the year after a 57-0 loss to Strasbourg on Monday.

Despite Warren County’s record, Sarchet said his team was still optimistic and had competed against the top two teams in the Northwestern District Class 3. Sarchet said they are still trying to find a replacement game for October 29th as they are supposed to be playing Mountain View. Mountain View had to cancel its season because not enough players were available.

“We just have to take care of business,” said Sarchet. “We still have three district games to go and hopefully a fourth game. It would be nice to take a closer look at these and score some wins.”

Coffman said he feels the team is about to turn and take a win.

“I feel like we just have to go out and do our best for four quarters,” said Coffman. “And work on a few little things that we keep messing up because that’s what gets us through the little things in the end.”

NCAC Appeals Removal of Lawn Boy and Gender Queer from Fairfax, Virginia, School Libraries

The National Coalition Against Censorship has written to district officials in Fairfax County, Virginia after two books were removed from school libraries pending the results of a parenting challenge. The books, Jonathan Evison’s Lawn Boy and Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe, are both award-winning young adult novels aimed at readers ages 12-18. The removal does the students a disservice and may violate the First Amendment.

The books were challenged by a parent who was upset by their depictions of sexual situations. NCAC is deeply concerned about the removal of the books before a review could be completed. Under current district regulations, a challenge can take up to 120 days to resolve, so any parent disputes can prevent the use of a book for most of the school year.

The Supreme Court found that public school officials ‘discretion in relation to the removal of library books is particularly limited in order to protect students’ right of access to information, as “students must always be free to inquire to study and evaluate in order to gain new maturity and new understanding ”and“ the school library is the main place of this freedom ”. Board of Education v Pico, 457 US 853, 868-69 (1982).

In the same case, the court also warned: “[l]Local school authorities are not allowed to simply remove books from library shelves because they do not like the ideas contained in those books and, by removing them, are trying to dictate what should be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other issues of opinion. Pico, 457 U.S. 853,872 (1982). Hence, the removal of books from public school libraries to suppress ideas is a violation of the First Amendment.

Teenage books often deal with mature ideas in nuanced ways. Too often books are banned for certain scenes or passages that are torn from the context of the overall work. A committee of experts has the task of examining the value of the work as a whole and not judging it on the basis of individual words, scenes or images. Books are often the safest and most accessible way for young people to come to terms with new ideas and situations and can reflect their realities in life that they otherwise fear. While individual parents are free to choose what their own children read, they cannot determine which materials all students have access to.

In addition to reminding the district of their responsibilities for the First Amendment, the NCAC offered to help update their review guidelines to align with best practice.

The letter from NCAC was co-signed by the Authors Guild, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, National Council of Teachers of English, PEN America’s Children’s and Young Adult Books Committee, and Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Alexandria secured the first perfect double season since 1997

Alexandria’s only really close duel this fall came against Sartell-St. Stephen on September 16. The Cardinals faced another top 3 team in Thursday’s regular season finals in the Central Lakes Conference, beating Rocori (5-3, 4-2 CLC) with a 96-90 final.

It ended a perfect regular season for Alexandria 11-0 in doubles and also a win on an invitation at Fargo. It is the first time since 1997 that the Cardinals have been undefeated.

“The 11-0 win is a great success for this team,” said Alexandria’s head coach Crysta Krause. “At the start of the season they had set themselves the goal of having a winning streak and knew Sartell would have a strong team of fast swimmers, and staying undefeated just wasn’t on our radar with the success they had this year . ” really gave them confidence and made them work even harder in practice.

“They also realized more clearly that winning matches is not about having top swimmers who come first, but about those swimmers who can give a lineup depth, and they challenge themselves to score these points in 3rd place. , 4th and 5th places. “

This last duel went up to the very last event in the 400 freestyle relay. The meeting was drawn 86-86 at the time, meaning a win this final season would determine the team winner.

Brooklyn Millward, Alaina Guenther, Jisella Haskamp and Hattie Galloway left no doubt that they won by almost 4 seconds with a time of 3: 48.81. Julia Wilmesmeier, Rayna Holm, Sidney Johnson and Summer Overland added the last points with a third place (4: 02.48).

“After the 100th breaststroke, when we knew it would be in the last season, I was actually a little relieved,” said Krause. “I had great confidence in our relay to get the job done and I knew we had our top 100 free sprinters as part of this relay.

“Once they got in, they took the lead and it was just a matter of watching them do their job. Encounters and swimming can be unpredictable, but this season has swum consistently fast this season and you could see the determination on their faces as she went behind the blocks. While we’re still excited to see the result, it was really fun to see our ‘A’ and ‘B’ seasons work together for victory. “

This final race was part of seven first places for the Cardinals, including wins from Grace Urke (200 IM), Jisella Haskamp (50 free, 100 chest), Hattie Galloway (100 free), the 200 freestyle relay and Sidney Johnson (100 back) . The Cardinals took advantage of the depths up and down the line-up, including with big placements in the 100 breaststroke from Haskamp, Urke (3rd) and Emma Bugher (4th)

Alexandria will now shift its focus to the championship part of the season as the Cardinals head to the section’s real team meeting at the University of Minnesota-Morris tonight, Friday, to dive ahead of the Saturday morning swimming competition.

“The focus is on fine-tuning their races and ensuring that the girls stay healthy both physically and mentally,” said Krause. “They still have some lofty goals to work towards and the task now is to keep that goal in mind and show up on the day of the meeting with swimmers who can achieve it.”

Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce: Fairfax County issues plastic bag tax

10/14/2021 4:07 PM

The Fairfax
The district board recently passed a five-cent tax on plastic bags
this will come into force on January 1, 2022. Let’s take a closer look at this new regulation and how it will affect businesses and consumers in Fairfax County.

The General Assembly approved the tax during its last session so that it would be collected by the state in the same manner as retail sales and use taxes and then redistributed to Fairfax County.

The tax is levied “on every single-use plastic bag made available to a consumer of personal property by retailers in grocery stores, convenience stores, or drug stores”. This tax applies to small retailers and large stores that sell groceries or have a pharmacy. It applies to petrol stations with convenience stores. The tax is levied on groceries purchased through an online delivery service based in Fairfax County.

Exemptions from the five-cent tax include restaurant uses such as packing a take-away meal in a plastic bag. Other retailers such as clothing, office supplies or hardware stores are also excluded.

For food
There are some additional exceptions to supermarkets, convenience stores and drug stores
from the tax. These are plastic bags
Not taxed: 1) Heavy duty plastic bags with handles that are specially designed
designed and manufactured for multiple reuse and at least four mil. are
thick;

2) plastic
Bags that are used exclusively for wrapping, holding or packaging ice cream, meat, fish,
Poultry, produce, bulk bulk food, or perishable food in the correct order
to avoid damage or contamination;

3) plastic
Bags for dry cleaning or prescription medicine; and 4) plastic bags sold
in packaging and intended for use as trash, pet litter, or leaf removal bags.
These bags are all tax exempt.

to
To help retailers implement this new tax, they can withhold a percentage
the tax revenue for their use. This amount is two cents per pocket for 2022
and then from January 1, 2023, one cent per pocket.

It is unclear how much revenue Fairfax County will generate from this new tax. The national revenue survey estimates are between $ 20 million and $ 25 million. In 2012, Montgomery County
introduced a similar tax, and a 2018 news story reported $ 2.41 million in
Revenue. This sales decreased over time as consumers got used to it
Bring your own reusable bags when shopping.

How is Fairfax County the
Income from this new tax? The General Assembly says that the income from this tax may be
used for environmental purposes
Cleanup programs, pollution and waste prevention programs, educational programs
Programs to reduce environmental waste and provide reusable bags for
Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or women,
Benefits of the Infant and Children’s Program (WIC).

Home sales in Arlington solid in September | News / Arlington

[Sun Gazette Newspapers provides content to, but otherwise is unaffiliated with, InsideNoVa or Rappahannock Media LLC.]

Home sales in Arlington were down slightly year-on-year in September, but according to new data they were at the upper end of the 10-year range last September.

Meanwhile, the average single-family home appreciation slowed significantly while it reversed in the townhouse and condominium markets.

Whether these limp sales prices are a temporary spike or a sign that the Arlington market may have finally reached a point where housing costs are too far out of reach for many remains the million dollar question.

The 242 properties that closed last month were 11.7 percent down from 274 last September. It is worth noting, however, that the property market has moved from the early stages of COVID between late summer and late autumn last year. caught up on lockdowns that lead to above-average sales figures.

If you look back on September sales for the previous decade, the numbers for 2020 look good. Sales ranged from 190 (in 2019) to 254 (2015).

Both average ($ 645,000) and average sales prices ($ 725,956) were included for the month, but that was in part because fewer single-family homes were part of total sales. Single-family homes accounted for 33 percent of transactions in September, compared with 42 percent in the previous year.

Even so, the average sales prices were relatively flat on one leg of the home sales stool, on the other two:

• The average single-family home sales price increased 1.6 percent to $ 1,174,898.

• The median sales price for townhouses (townhouses, townhouses, and condos) was $ 504,256, down 10.8 percent.

• The average condominium price alone was $ 457,673, down 11 percent. A total of 41 properties changed hands for more than $ 1 million, including a trio for at least $ 2.5 million.

When you add it all up, total revenue for the month was $ 176.2 million, 21.7 percent less than last year’s $ 225 million.

Homes that closed in September spent an average of 30 days between listing and ratification of the sale, up from 21 the previous year, and fetching 97.8 percent of the original list price, up from 100.2 percent. Both of these indicate that the local market’s engine is still purring well, but is no longer overheating.

(Turn those frowns on your head, prospective home sellers: The number of outstanding contracts recorded in September rose 18 percent year over year, suggesting a few stronger months of sales.)

Of the homes sold in September, conventional mortgages were the method of closing the deal in 174 cases, followed by cash (43) and VA-backed loans (14).

Inventories remain relatively small – the 540 properties in the market at the end of the month equate to 2.5 months of supply, a number that, while moving towards equilibrium with buyers, is still leaning towards sellers.

The numbers represent most, but not all, of sales during the period. The figures for September 2021 are preliminary and can be revised.

TENSTAR signs former orgless top tier team

From an unorganized list that tore it apart at smaller women’s tournaments, to signing up with an organization and winning the first Game Changers series for Europe, TENSTAR Nova has come a long way. But with their new organization bringing years of Counter-Strike experience to a new title, the former GangsterzZ team is well positioned to satisfy their hunger to take on North America on an international scale.

While TENSTAR lined up the former Prestigious Women roster in the early days of competitive VALORANT before signing GangsterzZ, the organization is only just beginning to thrive. That fostered a strong relationship between them and their new players.

“TENSTAR selected us at a time when we hadn’t yet had any organizational proposals,” says Lucy “Sliicyy” Tran. “They presented themselves as a promising organization and were very hospitable. Today I don’t regret my decision for TENSTAR. I am really happy because they are a second family for us. “

TENSTAR nova and CS: GO

The head of the TENSTAR Nova family is, so to speak, the current head coach Mickael “Twenee” Annequin. He started out in esports helping teams in Counter-Strike, but his first full-time coaching experience was with Sliicyy.

“It was my first coaching experience,” said Twenee. “I helped a bit in CS on teams, but I never really got involved as a coach. When VALORANT came out, I started out as a player. “

Twenee is not the only one from the TENSTAR Nova Camp who has experience in Counter-Strike. Both Sliiccy and team captain Asma “LiriLia” Boughida played professional Counter-Strike before switching to VALORANT.

After countless hours of Counter-Strike games, both women were looking for a change of scenery that VALORANT brought with them. Its history is similar to that of many professionals currently participating in the VCT who have made a name for themselves and a career in a completely new title.

“I started playing VALORANT in the closed beta,” said Sliicyy. “I was really drawn to the game’s trailer. With over 5,000 hours of CS: GO, switching to VALORANT was child’s play because I was looking for something new. “

Increasing talent in EMEA Game Changers

In the round robin of the EMEA Game Changers tournament, 49 different teams competed for one of the 16 places in the main event. While TENSTAR Nova had an almost flawless run in the grand finale, the members still moved ahead of some other cadres who, in their opinion, could be considered top teams.

“For me, besides TENSTAR, the best teams in the Game Changers scene today are Guild and RIXGG,” said Sliicyy. “They all have a different style of play, but each has its charm.”

Besides Guild and RIXGG, they also count Oxygen Esports to the top teams in the EMEA Game Changers scene.

“Oxygen is really strong,” said LiriLia. “They are very structured and know how to react to everything we do. We know it won’t be that easy when we play another team because they know how to adapt. “

TENSTAR’s head coach, Twenee, said there were many teams that performed well throughout the event. He also mentioned that the team didn’t expect the tournament to go as flawlessly as TENSTAR Nova only dropped a single card.

International Tournaments and Cloud9 white

For EMEA, Game Changers only had one series to judge the best of the best. For NA, however, there were two other Game Changers series in addition to several other tournaments. Of these three Game Changers tournaments, one team ruled all the others: Cloud9 White.

Winning after such an overwhelming performance Back to back to back, they are the obvious target for teams outside the region like TENSTAR Nova.

“For me, the NA team that was supposed to be played would be Cloud 9 because we could finally compete with the NA team that everyone is talking about,” said Sliicyy.

But not only Cloud9 White wants to conquer TENSTAR Nova after hers victory in EMEA. The next step would be an international women’s tournament, a real parallel to events like the VCT Masters Island and Berlin. That way, LiriLia could indicate which region she thinks is the strongest.

“Overall, we have better teams in Europe,” said LiriLia. “There are three or four good teams in NA, but I think we are stacked in Europe.”

Ultimately, as with VCT teams, it is only through an international LAN that it is possible to determine who is really at the top.

No NA team has been able to hold their own against Cloud9 White so far, but TENSTAR Nova has started to make a solid impression of their initial game changer success. With a few more event wins, they could achieve the same dominance that Cloud9 White enjoyed and build the potential of an all-time classic game when they play.

This success has helped TENSTAR, which took part in the VALORANT Champions Tour as well as the Game Changers and Rainbow Six, solidify itself as an up-and-coming organization looking to gain respect in the eSports scene. But first comes her next test during the second EMEA Game Changers series, which will take place in late October.
