“He did what he loved”: Richmond man honors brother who died in the Vietnam War

RICHMOND, Virginia (WRIC) – More than 9,000 burials are located in Richmond National Cemetery, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. With every tombstone comes a story.

James Israel King was 22 years old when he was killed in Vietnam. His only brother, older brother Wiley King, said he paid his respects to James several times a year, including every Memorial Day.

“I came to Richmond in 1963. He came in about ’64, was here for about six months, and joined the Marine Corps, and he was very happy about it, ”said Wiley. “I think it was Panama where he was supposed to go and then after he was there about three or four months, President [Lyndon B.] Johnson called and said he had to send 300 marines to Vietnam. He was the one in the group who went there, and he was there for about a year. About a month before he could come back, we lost him over there. “

8News Anchor John Rogers reflects on his grandfather on Memorial Day

He died on November 27, 1967, according to James’ tombstone in Richmond National Cemetery. Wiley said the King family never found out much about how James died.

“My mother, she was real, really sad; we’re all sad about it, ”said Wiley. “During that time the United States lost many young men there.”

According to the National Archives, the US military killed more than 58,000 people in the Vietnam War.

“I’m grateful to all of them, for all of you who have served,” said Wiley.

Wiley said his brother took pride in wearing the uniform and was enjoying the military training.

James was buried with other service members in Richmond National Cemetery more than five decades ago. When Wiley visits him, he says that he is usually silent.

“I really don’t talk much,” he said. “I think about what happened that time when we were growing up, you know that he really didn’t get a chance to see too much since he was so young.”

Biden honors war dead in Arlington and begs the nation to heal

Wiley was without James for most of his life. Wiley said his only peace is knowing what James was fighting for.

“He did what he loved and it was good for humanity,” said Wiley. “It makes me feel a little better. But it still hurts. “

Most of the military personnel buried in Richmond National Cemetery died in Confederate prisons, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. These include 3,200 Union soldiers who were reburied from Oakwood Cemetery and another 388 from Hollywood Cemetery. The remains of 2,710 Union soldiers who were killed in local fighting are also buried in the eight-acre cemetery.

Hendrick compares Tim Richmond to Larson

Rick Hendrick knew Kyle Larson was talented. After all, he’s seen Larson win NASCAR races (before signing him) as well as dirt racing around the country.

Kyle Busch is happy to be the best after a Hendrick rush

Bowman is relieved to save fifth place after days of handling problems

Larson did a better job – Elliott

But now that Hendrick is in the front row of Larson’s success, the Hall of Fame team owner sees something familiar. After Larson dominated the Coca-Cola 600 to his second win of the season on Sunday night, Hendrick didn’t hesitate when asked if Larson’s driving style reminded him of anyone.

“Tim Richmond,” said Hendrick.

A star who never had a chance to shine in NASCAR, Richmond died of AIDS in August 1989. But in his short career, Richmond made sure every fan and driver knew he was there. Considered a larger-than-life character with a bright personality, Richmond won 13 races, nine of which drove for Hendrick.

Hendrick has always described Richmond as incredible car mastery. A quality Hendrick sees in Larson.

“(He’s going to) put a car in places you think it won’t drive and want to have fun and win, want to lead every lap,” said Hendrick. “He just reminds me a lot of Tim. All of our guys have unique talents, but he’s a racing driver.

“I’m looking at William [Byron] and how far William has come. William, he was there every single week. I think they’ll only get stronger together. But Kyle probably has more racing experience than the other guys. He drives everything there is to race and he says it makes him better. When you get in any car and drive on a track and win, when you have the guys who win all the races there, I think he made a statement about how talented he is. “

Hendrick already knew Larson was talented, but admitted he was surprised at how quickly Team # 5 put it all together. At Charlotte, a track that Larson had previously only led 20 laps, Larson swept all three stages, leading 327 of 400 laps.

Victory No. 269 would not be possible without some of our winning drivers. pic.twitter.com/oWgGn05Hkh

– Hendrick Motorsports (@TeamHendrick) May 31, 2021

Larson is the first driver to break the 1,000-lap mark (1,105) this season. He leads the series in the listed laps, 726 of them in the last five races. Larson also leads the series in stage wins (nine).

“He’s been through a lot and seeing him come here and run like that and make a statement and show his talent, I’m just excited that he just feels really good and has a really great vibe with him and Cliff [Daniels]”Said Hendrick. “I’m looking for a lot of victories for the rest of the year.”

Murder Suspect Arrested in Fairfax County | Winchester Star

WINCHESTER – A Fredericksburg teenager accused of fatally shot and injured another Winchester teenage boy on May 21 was arrested in Fairfax County on Thursday.

Amanda R. Behan, deputy chief of the Winchester Police Department, said US Marshal Service officials arrested Demetrius Dominique Brown at an apartment complex in Fairfax County around noon. She said he was unarmed. Behan said Winchester police contacted the US Marshals Service about Brown for previously investigating him. She said she had no details about the previous case or how the marshals found Brown.

Brown, 18, is accused of killing Jaiden Myers, 18, in an apartment in the Orchardcrest Apartments complex on Wilson Boulevard around 7:55 p.m. Brown also shot and killed a 17-year-old who was seriously injured.

In an affidavit filed on Wednesday at the Frederick County Circuit, Detective Bryan T. Derryberry searched for phone records related to the shooting.

Behan, who said several phones had been picked up by police, refused to comment on the warrant or two sealed warrants filed by police at Winchester Circuit Court on the same day. Behan said Brown could face additional charges, but stressed that the investigation has only just begun. Limited information is disclosed in order to avoid compromising the case. “We just want to make sure that justice is done,” she said.

Myers was in the process of earning his GED and graduating from Handley High School next month.

Ian Goddard, a close friend of Myers, said Myers is excited to graduate. He said he was planning to find a job in the warehouse and was considering a career in engineering. Goddard described Myers as fun-loving, “full of life” and rapping.

“He was excited to get his life going and begin,” said Goddard, who graduated from Handley in January. “So it was really sad to see him go.”

Goddard said he didn’t know Brown.

Goddard said the other teen’s condition is improving and that the two teenagers’ friends have gathered to support their families.

Animal fund renamed in memory of the deceased district head | news

Contributing Report

Goochland Pet Lovers’ Good Neighbor Fund (GPL) has been renamed in memory of William E. Quarles, Jr., who served on the Goochland Pet Lovers board of directors. The new name and logo were unveiled on May 20th during a ceremony attended by family, friends and colleagues of the Quarles family.

Quarles has served Goochland County in many ways, including serving as an overseer, commissioner, school board member, and community volunteer. In everything he did, his top priority was to stand up for the members of the Goochland community. While on the board of Goochland Pet Lovers, he urged the organization to reach out to all areas of the county.

“William came up to me many times after a board meeting. He always asked how my family was doing since he worked with my father. Then we discussed ideas on how the GPL could help the citizens of Goochland. The Good Neighbor Fund does just that – it lends a helping hand – and there is no better person to name the fund after, ”said Sarah Marshall, board member of the GPL. “When the board thought about how to honor William, we immediately thought of the school system. The CTE students created the most beautiful plaque for us to present the new logo to the Quarles family. “

The Good Neighbor Fund was founded by Goochland Pet Lovers in September 2020 and launched in February 2021. The program empowers families and individuals by providing support and coordinating low-cost / free veterinary care so Goochland families can keep their pets healthy and in their homes.

Biden celebrates Memorial Day at Arlington Cemetery by calling for empathy and unity

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden paid tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in the service of their country during a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day and spoke deeply personally about overcoming loss and the importance of upholding democratic values in the home and in the world Foreign countries.

Regarding the victim of military families who lost a loved one, Biden spoke at length about his personal experience of losing his son Beau Biden, an Iraq war veteran who died of brain cancer six years ago yesterday.

“To those in mourning for a loved one today, Jill and I have an idea of how you are feeling,” Biden said in remarks after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “Our losses are not the same but this black hole you feel in your chest as if it were sucking you in, that’s what we get. “

It was the first time Biden attended a ceremony as Commander-in-Chief that has been held every year since the Civil War. In his remarks, Biden urged Americans to show more empathy for one another and to unite around the common ideals on which America is built. He also touched on some of the issues the country is currently grappling with, including voting rights and racial equality.

“Democracy thrives and the infrastructure of democracy is strong when people have the right to vote freely and fairly and comfortably, through a free and independent press to pursue the truth, followed by facts, not propaganda, alike applied rule of law. “and fair to every citizen, regardless of where they come from or what they look like,” said Biden.

Biden also warned people around the world and at home who pose a threat to democracy.

“Our troops fought this battle in fields around the world, but also a battle of our time and a mission for each of us, every day,” said Biden. “Democracy itself is at home here and in danger all over the world. “”

At some point, Biden pulled a card from his pocket, which he supposedly carries with him every day, showing the number of soldiers who lost their lives in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which was 7,036 on that memorial day.

During his remarks over Memorial Day weekend, Biden reflected on the ministry of his son Beau and how he was affected by his death at the age of 46. Biden and other family members celebrated the anniversary of Beau’s death with a memorial in their church in Delaware on Sunday and then went to his grave and left flowers.

“Yesterday was the anniversary of his death and it’s a hard time, a hard time here for me and my family, as well as for so many of you,” said Biden. “It can hurt to remember, but it hurts how we feel and how we heal. On Memorial Day, I always feel Beau close by, I always know where to be, right here to honor our fallen heroes. “

As Biden’s motorcade left Arlington Cemetery, he made an unscheduled stop between the tombstones to meet with several families who paid their respects.
