The city’s emergency services were out early Tuesday morning to clean drainage pipes of debris. The city provides free sandbags to residents and businesses at 133 S. Quaker Lane from 9am to 12pm.
Storm surges and floods are unfortunately nothing new to Alexandria residents and business owners. The last major tropical storm – Isaias – in August 2020 brought water past the curbs in the lower old town. Storm surges have sometimes pushed water from the Potomac River several feet up on King Street.
The officials urged everyone to make preparations and draw up an emergency plan for the family.
Some tips are:
Clear dirt from your gutters and gutters
Fuel and service vehicles
Pack an emergency kit if you are threatened with evacuation
Set the refrigerator to maximum cold, only opening it when necessary, and packing your freezer with as much as possible.
Fill bathtubs and large containers with water for sanitary reasons.
