MARTINSVILLE – During a shortened college baseball season, Ferrum College second right-handed Will Davis was the last starting pitcher to show the gum for the Panthers.

Davis, a former prep star at Class 3 Tunstall in the Piedmont District, will be back on the hill with the Martinsville Mustangs of the Coastal Plain League this summer.

Davis is one of 14 pitchers on the Mustangs list, 12 of whom are right-handed.

Davis (3-1) was a 4-2 winner over rivals Eastern Mennonite of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in his last start for the Panthers this spring.

Davis allowed four hits, two walks, and a well-deserved run in seven innings. He hit eight and hit two batters.

Davis was consistently in the lead – the Panthers had a 4-0 lead after scoring once in the first inning and three times in the fourth frame.

Davis retired from Eastern Mennonite’s first run in the sixth. He worked out of a base-laden jam in the third by fanning two consecutive batters from the middle of the Royals line-up.

In the seventh, Davis knocked out the final blow, which he encountered on a third blow after a visit from Panthers’ skipper Ryan Brittle on the hill.

“This is one of the best games Will has played for us,” said Brittle after his club’s 11th win.
