Top Democrats in Congress have debated whether MP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could file an injunction against GOP MP Marjorie Taylor Greene after the Republican yelled at her colleague in the Capitol earlier this month, Politico reported Tuesday.
Democratic sources told Politico that Ocasio-Cortez would likely have to apply for the injunction himself.
An Ocasio-Cortez spokesman did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment on Tuesday.
Greene has targeted Ocasio-Cortez repeatedly over the past few years. In 2019, Greene and some of her staff mocked the Ocasio-Cortez staff and destroyed the Congressmen’s guest book outside their Capitol office.
On May 12, Georgian Conservative lawmaker chased Ocasio-Cortez down a hallway as the two left the House, accusing them of supporting terrorists and “radical socialism,” according to two Washington Post reporters who witnessed the incident .
“You don’t care about the American people,” Greene shouted to Ocasio-Cortez, according to The Post. “Why do you support terrorists and Antifa?”
A spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez urged Congress leaders to “take real steps to make Congress a safe, civil place” following the May incident.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats have called for a House Ethics Committee investigation into Greene over her treatment of Ocasio-Cortez, behavior that Pelosi characterized as “verbal assault” and “abuse”. Ocasio-Cortez called Greene “deeply uncomfortable” and said her “fixation” on progressive lawmakers worried her and other members.
“I think this is an assessment that needs to be made by the right professional,” she told reporters.
Greene mocked Ocasio-Cortez’s security concerns.
“@AOC ‘Ms. Defund The Police’ wants to call the police to safety because they are afraid to debate their socialist GND with me,” she tweeted. “AOC is a scam and a hypocrite. That’s fine, Sandy. Since you lack the courage and intelligence to debate me, I’ll be discussing the person who really wrote it.”
