Fairfax County Schools are drafting a draft policy not to volunteer with ICE WDVM25 & DCW50

FALLS CHURCH, VA. (WDVM) – The Fairfax County government passed its public trust and confidentiality policy three months ago, which means the county will not cooperate in enforcing federal civil immigration laws. Now, Fairfax County’s public schools are in the process of drafting their own guidelines to follow in the county’s footsteps.

The school board voted unanimously on Tuesday to develop a policy that is consistent with the district to build trust among children and immigrant families in the district.

Karl Frisch, member of the Fairfax County School Board, said, “This is really about regaining trust in our immigrant families. Too many families have lost their trust and to regain trust we need to show that we are only involved in education. “

Cooperation with federal authorities such as ICE is prohibited unless there is a court order.

“That depends on the fear. Fear of being reported or deported prevents families from accessing the critical services that Fairfax County Public Schools offer, from meals to mental health services, parenting workshops and academic workshops for their children, “Frisch said.

School officials said there have been situations where undocumented students told the board they had never reported bullying or assault for fear of being reported to the ICE.

Diane Burkley Alejandro of ACLU People Power Fairfax said, “This policy will only create the confidence we need if FCPS enforces it and makes sure everyone is aware of it. You have to shout it from the rooftops. “

Alejandro, a member of ACLU People Power Fairfax, said there are changes going on beyond school as they work with members of the community such as the Fairfax Commonwealth Attorney, Steve Descano, and the Sheriff’s Office.

“It’s going to take a lot of work, but it’s worth it,” said Alejandro.

Currently, school principals do not have a specific timeframe for this new policy to come into force.
