Heavy storms over Southside Va. Weather likely to subside tonight

New thunderstorms have appeared over Richmond and central Chesterfield Counties in the past 15 minutes, but after 6 p.m. they are no longer severe. Any activity is likely to drift east over time. However, new cells could continue to develop in or near the subway area for the next several hours.

So far, most of the action has been near the Virginia-North Carolina border. Several major storms have occurred between Rocky Mount and Clarksville, including one that triggered tornado warnings over parts of Pittsylvania and Halifax counties. There have been no reports of damage in the area yet, but plenty of quarter-size hail and even half-dollar hail.

Hampton Roads also faces a cluster of severe storms with high winds, hail and downpours.

Much of Southside Virginia is on a heavy thunderstorm watch until midnight.

This includes the Tri-Cities, but not Richmond. The surveillance area also extends to Emporia, South Hill, South Boston, Danville, Martinsville, Wakefield, Franklin, Smithfield, Suffolk, and Chesapeake.

As of 4 p.m. there are two main storms in the Commonwealth. A cluster of strong to severe storms south of Roanoke moves east into Piedmont. There are also isolated strong and severe storms southeast of Richmond between Surry and Chesapeake. This activity will move east and northeast across tidewater.
