HPD: Fiery, fatal wreckage on Richmond may include street racing

Call Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS if you have any information that could help investigators.

HOUSTON – A fiery crash in southwest Houston closed Richmond Avenue Wednesday morning, and police believe street races may have been involved.

The crash occurred according to information provided by Sgt. Uribe with the Houston Police Department.

Uribe said a BMW was racing west when the driver allegedly gave a red light and then lost control and hit a tree. The impact was so severe that the BMW split into two parts and then caught fire. The driver died on the scene.

A witness told police they saw the BMW spinning another vehicle, possibly a black Dodge Charger or Challenger, just before the accident. The Dodge did not stop after the crash.

Michelle Choi of KHOU 11 reported that as of 5:45 a.m., the area was still cordoned off and treated as a crime scene, and Richmond was closed in both directions west of Hillcroft.

The name of the BMW driver was not published immediately.

Sgt. Uribe said the Dodge driver should report before the police track them down. Investigators believe there are high quality surveillance cameras in the area and they may be able to track down the other affected vehicle.

The deadly wreck comes as MPs and police continue cracking down on illegal street racing in the city of Houston and the rest of Harris County.
