DAVIDSON, NC –

Richmond University sophomore Sutton Orndorff (Charlotte, NC) scored the winning goal in the third quarter, giving the Spiders their first win of the 2021 spring season on Saturday 1-0 against Davidson at Belk Turf Field.

“It was a tough team win today,” said head coach Jamie Montgomery said. “I’m proud of how hard you worked as a team in 60 minutes of competitive hockey.”

The spiders (1-1, 1-1 A-10) and the wild cats (3-3, 1-1 A-10) were tied with 0-0 in the first half. UR had the advantage in shots (5-4) and corners (6-2) as the Richmond goalkeeper Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) And Davidson’s Netminder each scored two saves.

Orndorff’s goal came just 55 seconds into the start of the third quarter, beating Davidson’s goalkeeper near the post for her first goal of the season. This was Orndorff’s second career goal.

Latta racked up her first shutout, scoring three more saves in the game, one in the third quarter and two more in the fourth, to keep the Davidson offensive in check, despite the Wildcats having pulled their goalkeeper in the final three minutes of the competition.

Together with Orndorff in the second year Regan McCrossan (Waxhaw, NC) and newbie Olivia De Cain (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) The Spiders scored three shots on goal.

Richmond ended up with the advantage in the corners (8-4) while Davidson held the advantage in shots and shots on goal with 10-9 and 5-3.

The spiders return to action on Friday March 26th to face Saint Louis at 3 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
