Local law enforcement agencies in DC, Maryland and Virginia are preparing for the 38th annual National Night Out, a community-building day where police and communities come together to build relationships.
Law enforcement agencies in DC, Maryland and Virginia are preparing for the 38th annual National Night Out, a day when police and communities come together to build relationships.
“Neighborhoods have block parties, festivals, parades, barbecues, and various other community events that include safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, rescue worker visits, exhibitions, and more,” states the National Night Out website.
Community members are asked to turn on the porch lights when they go to the events.
Traditionally, for most locations in the DC region and across the country, the National Night Out takes place on the first Tuesday in August between 5pm and 9pm each year. Traditionally, most events in the DC region take place on Tuesday, August 3rd.
There will be some mask requirements this year, but these guidelines will be determined individually. Over the past year, many jurisdictions in the region canceled their events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The established mantra, stemming from the founding of the National Association of Town Watch, the founder of the event, aims to “raise awareness of crime prevention, generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs, the neighborhood spirit and to strengthen the partnerships between police and community ”. and send a message to criminals to let them know that the neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back. “
Over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide attend the event. The first National Night Out took place in 1984.
Below is a list of community events scheduled for Tuesday, August 3rd, although not all jurisdictions have finalized their schedules. Organizations wishing to attend an event can register here.
