FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond men’s tennis team won the colon, taking three singles wins to secure a 4-3 road win at George Mason on Thursday.
The Spiders (5-6, 2-1 A-10) started the game by winning two of their three doubles and took a 1-0 lead. Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania) and Junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) defeated Rishab Sardana and Erick Rivas (6-1) in doubles No. 2.
In doubles No. 3, Junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, NY) and PhD student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, VA) fell 6-3 against Herman Jentoft and Luke Maxwell.
Newcomer Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pennsylvania) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, MD) clinched the colon with a 7-5 win over Rithik Sardana and Ryan Charles in No. 1 doubles.
In the singles Kliebhan won in straight sets against Rithik Sardana 6: 4, 6: 3 in the singles. George Mason earned his first point after Rishab Sardana scored a 6-4, 6-4 win over Fernandez in the No. 2 Singles.
The Patriots finished the match 2-2 when Charles won a tight third set against Walsh 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the No. 3 singles. Wernink increased the Spiders lead to 3: 2 after beating Momin Khan 1: 6, 6: 4, 6: 3 in the third set.
Erwin took the win with a straight set win over Rivas, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles. In the final game, Jentoft won a third set of Super Tiebreakers against Keitelman, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) to make the final score 4-3.
Richmond will face James Madison at the Westhampton Tennis Courts on Saturday April 3rd at 12:00 noon.
