Spiders tied up in 7th place after 36 holes at the Georgia State Invitational

DULUTH, Ga .– The Richmond Spiders men’s golf team shot rounds of 287 (-1) and 293 (+5) in Rounds 1 and 2 of Georgia State Invitational Monday at Berkeley Hills Country Club, and are in seventh place with 18 holes remaining. Richmond made it into the final round on Tuesday with 580 (+4), tied with Samford in seventh place in the field of 15 teams. The Spiders are four shots behind three teams that finished fourth with 576 (E) and 10 shots behind Lafayette (570, -6) as the top 10 teams are only separated by 11 shots.

“We are definitely within striking distance of the front runners,” said Richmond coach Adam Decker. “We’re not going to change our approach for tomorrow – we just have to drop a few putts.”

A pair of Spiders will move into the finals among the top 20 of the individual leaderboard. Second year junior Ben Cooper and Garrett Clark are in the field of 87 at 144 (E) in 19th place after shooting identical rounds of 71 (-1) and 73 (+1) on Monday. Clark played the par 3 of the Berkeley Hills in 2 under par, tied with the third best in the field.

Senior Michael Childress and Junior Lou Baker are two shots back on 146 (+2) and thus occupy 34th place. Childress shot 73 (+1) on rounds 1 and 2, while Baker Birdie carded a 72 (E) on Monday morning and a 74 (+2) on Monday afternoon.

Freshman Cole Ekert shot 74-77 / 151 (+7) and is tied on 54th place.

Richmond begins the final round on Tuesday at 8:05 am and will tee off on hole 1.
