With 422, Wagner ranks sixth on the all-time save list of professional baseball – he is the second among left-handers.

Most of these saves were made during his career with Astros, the club selected in the first round, 12th overall, in the June 1993 amateur draft after its junior campaign with the Panthers.

Wagner made his Major League debut against the Mets in New York on September 13, 1995 and became the star of the Astros in June of the following year.

Wagner was in the same drafting class as former major league star Alex Rodriquez, who was voted # 1 by the Seattle Mariners after his senior year.

Wagner, a seven-time All-Star (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2010) and former National League Rolaids Relief Man of the Year winner, played for the Panthers from 1991 to 1993 and also played a football season for the NCAA Division III school.

Wagner ended his Ferrum career with a 17-3 record – he was mainly used as a starting pitcher – with an ERA of 1.63 and holds the Division III record for a season of 19.1-109 strikes in 51 innings. He established this standard in 1992.

Wagner is a member of the Ferrum College Sports Hall of Fame, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
