Tuesday’s primary office holders for Richmond’s sheriff and chief prosecutor have both declared victory.
Colette McEachin, who was running for her first full term as Commonwealth attorney, and Antionette Irving, who was re-elected to a second term as sheriff, thanked voters for their support, despite results still being tallied Wednesday morning.
With no Republican candidates for any of the positions, Tuesday’s Democratic contest winners are also the presumed winners of November’s general election.
In the sheriff’s race, Irving fended off a strong performance from William Burnett, who had tallied 45% of the vote on Wednesday morning.
Irving posted this message on Facebook Wednesday morning: “Thank you to the voters and residents of the City of Richmond for your vote and support. Today I stand before you as the Democratic candidate while we look at the final official results of yesterday’s primary.
“Thanks to our many volunteers and supporters. Yesterday was a good day and for many this was a new kind of trip; but we have proven that we can rise to the challenge. We congratulate you all on this step. Together, we can Continue to shape this city, which we love, the way we want it, “says her contribution.
Irving dumped CT Woody in a Democratic primary four years ago. Burnett, who was deputy in command during the former Sheriff Woody’s twelve-year tenure, has been campaigning to recapture the seat ever since.
