IONA, Idaho – A 22-year-old cyclist who died Wednesday after being hit by a car near Idaho Falls was part of a volunteer group cycling around the country to find homes for people in need to build.

Philadelphia-based Bike and Build group identified the woman as Anne Davis, a graduate of the College of William & Mary and a participant in the program.

Davis was riding the program’s central U.S. route, which stretches from Virgina Beach to Canon Beach, Oregon, when she and another cyclist in the group were met on Highway 26.

The other affected woman, identified as Laura Stark, 26, from Michigan, is in critical condition at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Bryan Lovell, Patricia Beyer, 33, of Idaho Falls, was driving west on the freeway when she encountered Davis and Stark heading in the same direction.

According to Lovell, several motorists, including medical staff, stopped to help after the accident and tended to the injured women until paramedics arrived.

Both cyclists were taken to the hospital, where Davis was pronounced dead. According to the authorities, Beyer also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

No one was charged or cited in connection with the crash. Both Davis and Stark were wearing helmets when they were hit, Lovell said.

Bike and Build organizers say they have stopped all cycling teams on their routes for Thursday and Friday and canceled two construction days scheduled for Davis and Stark’s team in Idaho Falls.

According to online profiles for Stark and Davis, both women had been cycling for 57 days and had covered 2,901 miles when they were met.

The wreck is being investigated further.
