Montgomery County, Alexandria via Free Transit Maps

Proposal for a free transit

With local governments no longer having to pinch pennies with the aid money from the last round of COVID relief, several in the DC area are proposing free transit.

Legislators in several parts of the DC Region are discussing plans to temporarily or indefinitely free mass transit, aided by healthy budgets sustained by COVID-19 relief laws.

Montgomery County announced Tuesday that it will scrap plans to re-charge its Ride On bus system, which is due to be picked up on April 5th. Instead, the tariffs will remain free until at least the end of June.

The announcement came after approval from the district council, which unanimously signed a letter to support the extension of the free bus rides.

District Manager Marc Elrich said: “As our residents need a bus service to get vaccines that will be more readily available in the next few months, I am delighted that we will be extending the free Ride On bus service until the end of June. The District Council and I am on the same page and understand how important this free service is for our residents in these difficult times. “

Evan Glass, a member of the General Council, says he sees the move as helping create justice and helping low-income residents use transit to get to vaccination appointments, citing the imminent opening of the county’s mass vaccination station in Germantown.

In Alexandria, Mayor Justin Wilson is preparing a budget proposal that would make the city’s DASH transit service free and cost the city an estimated $ 1.7 million.

Wilson says if it stays within the budget approved in May, the free service would begin September 1, in time for the introduction of a redesigned route system.

Mike Turner, Loudoun county supervisor representing the Ashburn borough, recently proposed free tube rides on the Silver Line as soon as new stations were completed to drive traffic, although Metro has not yet commented on the specific idea.

In a statement to FOX 5, Metro said it was open to discussions about tariff policy.

DASH said in a statement:

“The DASH Board of Directors will discuss the issue and the possibility of a toll-free service at the April 14 meeting. DASH is following the city’s budget process and any funds that can be used to improve or expand public transport are now becoming more closely than ever needed. “

The anniversary of the murder of a Richmond father of four brings a plea from his family

RICHMOND, VA. – It’s tough enough to be ten, and when you add to it the life without a father due to violence, it’s heartbreaking.

“He wanted to bring me and my sister something to eat,” said Amaya Brown.

The little girl says she almost feels guilty knowing that a food run brought her father into a dangerous neighborhood.

Antonio Brown was found shot dead in his car in the Tiger Mart parking lot on Hill Street in Gilpin Court early one afternoon last year.

Two men have been arrested so far, but on the anniversary of his death, his mother believes others have important information.

“On March 29, 2020, my 28-year-old son Antonio Lewis Brown Jr. lost his life here,” said his mother, Ramona Brown. “It’s pointless. I’m standing where he was shot.” in his vehicle. “

Brown says two arrests were made, but there have been several setbacks.

“The coronavirus,” she said. “The pandemic stopped everything.”

Brown believes there are more people in this community who can help their son’s case by standing up and ruling out the possibility of their sons’ killers getting away with it.

She asks them to call the police.

“That’s what I need to get some kind of closure,” said Brown, choking back the tears.

And the closure, says little Amaya, only reminds her father that she is not coming home and how it used to be. “How he used to take care of me,” said the little girl.

Antonio Brown had three girls and one boy, all under the age of ten.

A year has passed but his kids say it still feels like it happened yesterday.

The new film portrays Richmond, VCU alumni, in a mind-boggling, grainy way

“Welcome to the Show”, directed by VCU Professor Dorie Barton, features over 30 VCU student actors. The film premiered on March 20th at the Cinejoy Virtual Fest. Photo courtesy Dorie Barton

Claire Darcy, Contributing Writer

As four students wander through town hoping to find their way home in the new feature film “Welcome to the Show,” many of Richmond’s well-known landmarks are depicted, from street paintings to Belle Isle.

Dorie Barton, the film’s producer, writer, director and co-editor, said she had wanted to make a movie about the city since moving to Richmond.

“I think the city is so beautiful,” said Barton. “It’s so cinematic in all the contradictions that are here.”

The film stars over 30 VCU student actors and follows four people – played by Dillon Douglasson, Richard Follin, Keegan Garant and Christopher Martin – as they take part in a mysterious interactive theatrical experience known as The Show.

“Welcome to the Show” celebrated its world premiere on March 20th as part of the virtual film festival Cinejoy. Cinejoy is an online rerun of the annual Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival, an international independent film festival in California.

This year the festival ran for 10 days on the Cinejoy website and ended on Tuesday. Barton said the film was invited to be part of the festival after she submitted it to Cinequest.

“I wanted to challenge what the theater’s responsibility to its audience really is. How people who do the theater relate to their audience, care about their audience, ”said Barton.

Each of the four main characters has the same name as their actors but is a fictional version of the men. Douglasson said the four were best friends before the film and that keeping their own names made it easier to relate to the characters.

The friends meet the female cohort of participants in “The Show” on Belle Isle. Left to right: Maria LoPresti, Rachel Foeller, Rebecca Bailey, Havy Nguyen, Trinitee Pearson and Sarah Velasco-Kent. Photo courtesy Dorie Barton

“Every actor takes from his own life,” said Douglasson. “There are different aspects of the character that I could relate to – this is how I did it, just trying to relate to each situation and how I would react as a person and how I thought the Dillon in the film would react.”

The four main cast were students in Barton’s class on acting for the camera in the fall semester of 2019. The film was shot over 10 days in November 2019 and the editing process began last January, Barton said.

“It’s been the longest 10 days of my life that have passed in a snap,” said Douglasson.

The film begins when the four friends decide to stay on campus for their last Thanksgiving day together before they graduate and go their separate ways. Then Rich finds an uncleared red envelope in his jacket pocket. In the envelope there is an invitation to “The Show”, which is described as an “interactive theater adventure in three acts”.

The next morning the friends head to the Shafer Street Playhouse at the VCU, where they meet the Ticket Taker, played by Maya Forrester, and played on Lady Day, a character who explains the rules of “The Show” to the men by Chyanne Leeland. Forrester and Leeland both graduated from VCU last year.

As one of the film’s co-producers, Forrester said it was unexpected to play the role of Ticket Taker. If a dedicated actress didn’t appear, she had to step in to cast the role.

“I was one of the few women who went there that day,” said Forrester. “I put on a dress four sizes too small and loosened my hair from that morning. I said, “Oh no, I wasn’t ready for this” but it was really fun and a really good experience. “

The friends are led to a car where they meet the driver, played by Barton, who blindfolds the crew and takes them to an unfamiliar area. As the driver speeds up, they decide to look for clues and quickly discover that they are missing all of their precious personal belongings – phones, wallets, and keys.

The rules of “The Show” prohibit the characters from giving or receiving help from anyone, so they must work their way around Richmond and home on their own. Along the way, they encounter several groups of students who they suspect are actors in the interactive game.

Alongside his friend and fellow VCU student Andrew Bonieskie, Douglasson wrote original music for the film. He said much of the score was composed on his bass guitar, which he would play while re-viewing the scenes.

Barton was a graduate student at the time the film was made, and “Welcome to the Show” served as a thesis.

“It was only about six weeks from the time I asked them if they wanted to be in a movie to the time it was set,” Barton said. “I wrote the script during this time and did all the preparation for the production during that time. So it was a very intense six weeks of my life.”

Forrester was unable to submit their dissertation as the COVID-19 pandemic halted face-to-face classes in mid-spring 2020. She is happy to show the film as something she showed as a student last year, she said.

“‘Welcome to the Show’ was such an unexpected gift,” said Forrester. “It was my last project at VCU and it was a really great memory for me.”

“Welcome to the Show” can be streamed online in the future, but the dates and platforms have yet to be announced.

Older heavy bulldogs fall at Richmond Foster – Port Arthur News

NEDERLAND – The Dutch boys’ football team ended their season after losing 2-1 to Richmond Foster in the second round of the playoffs on Monday.

The Bulldogs’ Anthony Villanueva scored a header that lasted 11 seconds after an assist from Ethan Vincent.

“I thought we played well,” said Dutch head coach Keith Barrow. “Our schedule was to come out early and get everything on the line. We missed some good opportunities. I think we came up short here. We defended really well. We played really well too. We just couldn’t finish. “

Barrow said his team came out on the wrong end in an inch game.

“Whenever we crossed the ball, we were right there and just missed it,” he said. “We’d reach the end and hardly miss the shot. It was one of those things where you get most things right and the finishing touches to get the ball into the net just wasn’t there. “

Barrow compared the feeling to being able to ride up and down the field in a soccer game but not get into the end zone or get runners on the base and not get runs in baseball.

This year the Bulldogs will complete 12 seniors. Barrow said the trip with the players was bittersweet, especially given that his son Payne Barrow is one of the graduates.

“These are people I saw many times when my son played with a lot of them when they were growing up,” he said. “Everyone was in and out of the house, running around together. It has been a special coaching for her over the past four years. To see how it ends, I go a little deaf. You know the time is coming. Whether it’s this round, the next round, or after the state finals, it will still be the end. It’s a little daunting. “

During the regular season, strikers Payne Barrow and Ethan Vincent led the Bulldogs offensive attack with eight and nine goals respectively.

The head coach said he didn’t have a specific memory that the group noticed over their time at the NHS.

“You feel for all seniors,” said Barrow. “I remember what it felt like to be an athlete. For many of them, it will be the last competitive soccer game they play. Hopefully many of them, if nothing else, will play in adult leagues or intermural sports. I expect them to keep going. It’s one of those things that are difficult to put into words even when you are talking to them. “

Barrow said he was grateful for the time with the senior group and looked forward to what the future holds for each of them.

“I have a lot of great memories and a lot of respect for these young men,” he said. “It was a great ride.”

Dark fiber optic network comes to NoVa

The high-speed network plans to connect NoVa to subsea cables in Virginia Beach

Released

March 30, 2021

by

Jason Roop

A new regional fiber optic network with a length of 680 miles will be built in Northern Virginia in the second half of 2021. The project is a joint venture between Tenebris Fiber from Annandale, Diode Ventures from Kansas and JLC Infrastructure from New York.

Construction of the new dark fiber network will begin this year. The companies begin with a 75 mile buried network that runs through Counties of Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William, providing access from Ashburn to Manassas. (Dark fiber is a telecommunications term that refers to fiber optic cables previously installed in the ground but not yet used to send data.) When complete, the network will run approximately 680 miles through Virginia and Northern Virginia to Virginia Beach connect cable landing station that connects to high-speed intercontinental underwater internet cables to Europe and South America.

“It’s going to be a change for us,” says Victor Hoskins, CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, because of the speed, scope, and expandability. “The ability to grow is immense. … What’s so incredible about this one is that it plugs into the submerged cables that run across the ocean in Virginia Beach. “

The pandemic has increased data center demand for data, said Brad Hardin, president of Diode Ventures, a subsidiary of Black & Veatch. This is especially true of Loudoun County’s Data Center Alley, which is home to the world’s largest concentration of data centers.

“Data centers in this region will continue to require high quality, diverse networks to support their growing operations and customer demand,” said Hardin in the announcement.

According to Hoskins, one of the great features of the network is its ability to provide customers with exclusivity and direct access.

Down Under Construction, a contractor headquartered in Sterling, will do the engineering, procurement and construction as per the announcement.

If you’re feeling a little gross hearing about the gruesome details of the Armie Hammer scandal for the alleged DMs discussing cannibalism thoughts, you aren’t the only one in need of a cleanup.

Hammer’s estranged wife, Elizabeth Chambers, went to an age-old practice to purify the air in her home and posted a photo of some soothing wads of sage burning next to her laptop on her Instagram stories.

Burning sage is an ancient practice that is believed to clear a person’s space of negative energy or spirit, eliminate toxins, and promote healing.

Chambers recently broke her silence after the scandal surrounding her husband’s alleged DMs. He described his obvious sexual fantasies, including cannibalism and BDSM.

“For weeks I’ve been trying to process everything that has happened. I am shocked, heartbroken, and devastated. Heartbreak aside, I listen and will continue to listen and educate myself on these sensitive matters. I didn’t know how much I didn’t know, “said the 38-year-old on Monday, February 1st, about a photo of palm trees.

Regardless of her goals for discussing Hammer and her personal life, the journalist says that she really just wants to focus on “our children, my work and the healing at this incredibly difficult time”.

“Thank you so much for all the love and support, and in advance for your continued kindness, respect, and consideration for our children and me as we find ways to move forward. ? EC “, she told the fans on her Instagram.

Seafood restaurants anchor in Willow Lawn and Forest Hill

A King Crab Juicy Seafood Restaurant is on the way to Willow Lawn. (Mike Platania Photos)

Two New York-based restaurant chains that focus on seafood are shedding new homes in Richmond.

King Crab Juicy Seafood prepares to open a location in Willow Lawn while Hook & Reel prepares to open a store in Forest Hill.

The room at 1601 Willow Lawn Drive, Suite 800, was formerly the home of the Travinia Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar.

Rochester-based King Crab rents 7,000 square feet at 1601 Willow Lawn Drive, Suite 800, which has been vacant since 2019 when the Travinia Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar closed. It will be King Crab’s second local location to join his place in Chesterfield at 10456 Midlothian Turnpike. According to its website, it has 22 locations across the country.

New York City-based Hook & Reel opens in the old O’Charley room at 7131 Forest Hill Ave. Hook & Reel has more than 50 locations across the country, with almost as many in the works. The Forest Hill site will be the first in the region. A Hook & Reel spokeswoman said they plan to open this fall.

Attempts to reach out to King Crab’s local operators have been unsuccessful, but Willow Lawn’s owner, Federal Realty Investment Trust, confirmed the lease.

Both restaurants offer similar menus of customizable cooked seafood with clams, clams, lobster, and prawns. The crustaceans are cooked with spices, potatoes and corn at the customer’s choice. Other items on their menu include fried seafood and po ‘boy sandwiches.

A vacant building where O’Charley’s once lived on the south side is being converted into the Hook & Reel fish restaurant.

Hook & Reel is renting the 5,100 square foot building owned by local developer Harper Associates. Thalhimer’s Jim Ashby and Reilly Marchant represented Harper on the deal.

The Hook & Reel space seats 208 people and has a fully stocked bar.

Harper is currently planning an expansion of the Stratford Hills store that will include a new Chipotle-anchored retail building and dozen of townhouses.

King Crab will be arriving at Willow Lawn not long after leaving yet another seafood restaurant specializing in seafood. SaltBox Oyster Co. closed the mall last year, although the space was recently taken over by IHOP. The Mediterranean chain Cava Grill recently opened at Willow Lawn.

Over at the Fan, near the Sauer Center, The Boiling Crab is preparing to open at 2053 W. Broad St. For the past few years, Cornerstone has housed Cigar Bar, The Pig & The Pearl, and Republic Restaurant & Bar.
