Arlington’s vaccination rate is now higher than that of N. Va. Neighbors

With neighboring Alexandria and Fairfax Counties lagging for part of the year, a measure of Arlington’s vaccination rate is now the highest among major Northern Virginia jurisdictions.

As of this morning in Arlington, more than 180,000 doses of vaccine have been given and more than 75,000 people have been fully vaccinated. According to the Virginia Department of Health, 48.8% of the Arlington population have received at least one dose of vaccine.

That’s higher than Alexandria (44.5%), Fairfax County (48.6%), Loudoun County (48.3%), and Prince William County (42.8%). Two smaller jurisdictions – the towns of Falls Church and Fairfax – have rates of 52.7% and 52%, respectively.

Yesterday, President Biden’s goal was to have 70% of American adults vaccinated with at least one shot by July 4th. In Arlington, 115,626 people have received at least one dose of vaccine, which is nearly 60% of the adult population.

At 31.7%, Arlington is still behind Fairfax (32.3%) and Loudoun (31.9%) counties as measured by the percentage of the population that is fully vaccinated. The VDH numbers do not include doses administered by federal agencies that vaccinated military personnel and key federal employees.

For the past week, Arlington has received an average of just over 2,300 doses of vaccine each day. The county is currently accepting walk-ins at vaccination sites in Crystal City and near Columbia Pike through Friday.

The rate of new COVID-19 cases in Arlington continues to decline.

Arlington has pulled out of its streak of two straight days of single-digit new cases. 21 new cases were reported this morning, but the seven-day trailing total still fell to 111, the lowest point in 2021. Arlington’s test positivity rate is currently 3%.

According to the VDH, two new deaths in connection with Covid and two hospital stays have been recorded since Sunday.
